California, sunshine, and besties—what more could a girl gang ask for? From coastal charm to desert oddities and the glitz of Hollywood, our 8-day California road trip packed in beaches, hikes, quirky stops, and plenty of Insta-worthy moments. Here’s how our adventure unfolded.
Day 1- Arrival and Costal Escapades
We kicked off our mid-February adventure with a bright-and-early flight from Denver to Los Angeles on Southwest Airlines. Coffee in hand and playlists queued, we grabbed our rental car and wasted no time heading straight for the coast—because when you land in California, the ocean is calling.
Victoria Beach was our first stop, and it set the tone perfectly. Home to the iconic pirate tower, this stretch of coastline felt equal parts magical and wild. We wandered along the tide pools, watching tiny fish dart between rocks while crabs scurried for cover. It was the perfect place to stretch our legs, breathe in the salty air, and fully sink into vacation mode.
Next up was Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach, just a short drive away and every bit as dreamy. Soft sand, crashing waves, and hidden tide pools made it feel like a secret slice of paradise. We lingered longer than planned, snapping photos and soaking up the coastal calm before our stomachs reminded us it was brunch time.
Cue La Sirena Grill, conveniently located right across from the beach and exactly what we needed. Fresh, filling breakfast tacos and strong coffee hit the spot and gave us the energy boost we needed to keep exploring.
Refueled and happy, we headed south to Torrey Pines State Beach and Natural Reserve, where the scenery completely stole the show. Towering golden cliffs dropped into the deep blue Pacific, surfers dotted the waves below, and seabirds soared overhead. We wandered along the shoreline, braved the icy water with our toes, and snapped photo after photo of the rugged coast and pops of red wildflowers scattered throughout the landscape.

Where We Stayed
San Diego Airbnb – 441 Ravina St., San Diego (Apartment #3, first floor)
Our Airbnb was super minimal but checked all the boxes we needed for a one-night stay. It was very affordable, clean, and conveniently located—exactly what you want when you’re arriving late and heading out early the next day. Check-in was easy with the door code sent ahead of time, and while parking in space #4 was a bit tight, street parking nearby made it manageable. It wasn’t fancy, but it was comfortable, functional, and perfect for a quick overnight stop before hitting the road again.
Dinner Plans
After unpacking, we debated between El Pescador and The Taco Stand—and tacos won. Fresh, flavorful, and paired with a couple of margaritas, it was the perfect low-key way to toast the start of our California adventure.
Why Day 1 Was Perfect:
Day one was all about easing into vacation mode—sunny beaches, ocean air, great food, and zero pressure to rush. It set the tone we wanted for the trip—simple moments, good company, and letting the journey unfold naturally. We ended the day tired in the best way, already excited for what was ahead.
Day 2- La Jolla Seals & Desert Adventures
Our morning started with a casual stroll on our way to La Jolla Cove, where we watched the seals play in the surf. After checking out of our San Diego digs, we grabbed a quick bite at a local breakfast cafe before heading inland.
Known for its stunning cliffs and playful sea lions, La Jolla Cove did not disappoint. We arrived mid-morning and were greeted by the chattering and barking of seals lounging on the rocks, sunning themselves in complete bliss. It was impossible not to snap dozens of photos of these adorable creatures and the sparkling turquoise water around them. A short walk along the cliffside trails gave us panoramic views of the Pacific, and we even caught sight of kayakers paddling near the coves.
On The Road To Borrego Springs
The drive was a dramatic shift—coastal blues fading into rugged mountains, Joshua trees, and wide-open desert. The quiet beauty felt almost otherworldly.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park was our first stop. As California’s largest state park, it offered sweeping desert vistas, rock formations, and cactus-lined trails. Depending on the season, wildflowers dot the landscape, adding bursts of color to the otherwise arid terrain.
One of the items on our bucket list wast the Slot Canyon Hike, which did not dissapoint. Twisting through narrow sandstone walls felt like discovering a secret passage carved by time. The light filtering through created stunning textures—equal parts adventure and photo op.
Stay: La Casa del Zorro, Borrego Springs
We arrived at La Casa del Zorro in the late afternoon, just as the desert light began to soften. This charming resort is tucked into Borrego Springs with a mix of casita-style rooms, sprawling courtyards, and plenty of palm trees, giving it a relaxed, oasis-like feel. Our room was comfortable and well-appointed, with just enough space to settle in after a full day of exploration. The property also offers amenities like a pool, tennis courts, and trails—perfect for stretching your legs or enjoying a morning stroll.
After checking in, we took a few minutes to wander the grounds and soak in the quiet desert surroundings. Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant was a convenient option, letting us fully unwind without having to venture out.
One of the standout features of La Casa del Zorro is its location within the Borrego Springs Dark Sky Community, making it an official dark sky-certified area. As night falls, the desert sky transforms into a stunning canvas of stars—brighter and clearer than most city skies. We spent part of the evening stepping outside to admire constellations, the Milky Way, and even a few shooting stars—a magical, peaceful way to end the day.

After a restful night and a simple continental breakfast, we checked out of La Casa del Zorro and hit the road for a day of quirky desert stops and poolside relaxation.
Desert Oddities Along the Way
Galleta Meadows Sculptures felt like stumbling into a surreal outdoor gallery. Giant metal dinosaurs, animals, and figures rose from the sand, creating a whimsical contrast against the desert backdrop.
Salvation Mountain A true desert oddity, Salvation Mountain is an awe-inspiring, colorful tribute to love and faith. The vibrant layers of paint, inspirational messages, and hand-crafted details made it one of the most Instagram-worthy stops of the trip. Walking around, we couldn’t help but marvel at the dedication it took to create this desert masterpiece.
Unexpected Wildlife Moment – As we continued driving near the Salton Sea, we happened to catch the migratory birds passing through. I have never seen such a mass of birds in my life—the sky seemed alive with movement, a swirling, mesmerizing spectacle that added an unforgettable natural wonder to our desert adventure.
Lunch Stop: Shields Date Garden, Palm Desert – Open from 8 AM to 2 PM, this charming date farm was a sweet (literally!) experience. We indulged in date shakes, date ice cream, and other date-themed treats. It was a fun, quirky stop that also gave us a taste of local flavors—a perfect desert snack break before heading to Palm Springs proper.
Arrival in Palm Springs:
Stay: Caliente Tropics, Palm Springs
By late afternoon, we checked into this retro-chic oasis and immediately headed for the pool. Palm trees, colorful loungers, cocktails in hand—it was pure Palm Springs energy. We spent the afternoon lounging by the pool and enjoying dinner and drinks at the hotel bar.
Why Day 3 Was Special
Day 3 perfectly balanced weird and wonderful with rest and relaxation. Desert art, roadside surprises, and a sunny poolside afternoon reminded us that slowing down is part of the adventure.
Day 4- Mountain Views & Elegant Gardens
After a few days of beaches and desert adventures, Day 4 offered a refreshing shift in scenery—this time, up into the mountains and through some of Palm Springs’ more serene, cultivated spaces.
Morning: Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Our day began with a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which climbs 2.5 miles from the desert floor into the San Jacinto Mountains. The landscape changes dramatically during the ascent: desert scrub gives way to alpine forests, with snow-dusted peaks and panoramic views opening up along the way. At the top, we explored several short hiking trails that showcase the diverse terrain and provided ample vantage points for photos. The crisp mountain air and quieter surroundings offered a sharp contrast to the desert and city environments we’d visited earlier, making it a particularly refreshing start to the day.

After soaking in the Palm Springs sun, we checked out late morning and headed toward one of the most iconic landscapes in the state.
Joshua Tree National Park. Known for its iconic spiky trees, massive boulders, and surreal desert landscapes, Joshua Tree promised both adventure and tranquility—a perfect balance for our girls’ getaway.
Once inside the park, we explored the park’s famous trails and rock formations. The iconic Joshua trees provided a whimsical backdrop for photos, and the boulder-strewn landscape begged for climbing, exploring, and a little playful adventure. We wandered along short hikes, paused to admire panoramic desert views, and even discovered a few hidden corners away from the main paths where the desert felt completely ours.

We packed snacks for a casual picnic inside the park. Eating surrounded by the rugged desert landscape made for a peaceful, immersive experience and gave us energy for more exploring in the afternoon.
Afternoon: Arrival at Airstream Oasis, Yucca Valley

In the late afternoon, we checked into our Airstream rental, a stylish, retro-inspired desert hideaway. Nestled among Joshua trees and desert sands, it offered privacy, comfort, and a unique ambiance. The Airstream was small but thoughtfully equipped—perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking and sightseeing.
Evening Vibes: Desert Relaxation and Stargazing
Joshua Tree is known for its dark, clear skies, and the wide-open landscape made it the perfect spot for stargazing. We enjoyed a few drinks, and watched the stars emerge one by one, with constellations and even the Milky Way visible in incredible clarity. The stillness of the desert and the open sky provided a stark, beautiful contrast to the bustling city and crowded beaches we had visited earlier.

Day 6- Desert Oddities to Hollywood Glam
We woke up in the quiet of Joshua Tree, ready for a day that would combine the last of our desert adventures with the energy and glamour of Los Angeles. After checking out of our Airstream, we set out on a route that allowed us to see some quirky desert stops before heading into the city.
Morning & Early Afternoon – Quirky Desert Stops:
Pioneertown – Originally built as a movie set in the 1940s, Pioneertown still retains its Western-style charm. Walking along the wooden storefronts and vintage signage, we explored small shops and snapped photos of the town’s unique architecture. It’s a fun stop for a quick stroll and a taste of the old-West ambiance. We even snapped a photo with the Mayor! (Spoiler: he’s a cactus.)
Bob’s Crystal Cave & Sky Village Marketplace – Open on weekends, this hidden gem is a mix of crystals, minerals, and eclectic desert artifacts. The marketplace has a colorful, whimsical vibe that contrasts sharply with the quiet of Joshua Tree itself, making it an interesting and photo-worthy stop. It’s a good place to pick up unique souvenirs or simply admire the collection.
Arrival in Los Angeles:
- Stay: Hollywood Historic Hotel, 5162 Melrose Ave
We arrived mid-afternoon and were immediately charmed by the hotel’s retro-modern style. Its central location on Melrose Avenue made it an excellent base for exploring Hollywood, while the colorful lobby and historic architecture added personality to our stay.
Evening in L.A.:
After settling into the Hollywood Historic Hotel, we took a stroll along Melrose Avenue to soak in the city’s energy. The eclectic mix of murals, boutique shops, and neon lights makes even a casual walk feel like an adventure. For dinner, we stopped at Mel’s Drive-In Hollywood, a classic retro diner with fun ’50s vibes, hearty comfort food, and milkshakes that hit just the right note after a long day of travel and exploration. It was the perfect way to enjoy a casual, fun meal while soaking up a bit of Hollywood nostalgia.
Why Day 6 Was Memorable:
Day 6 highlighted California’s contrasts—serene desert landscapes in the morning, playful oddities in Pioneertown, and the bustling energy of Los Angeles by evening. The combination of quiet exploration and city excitement made the day feel dynamic and perfectly set the stage for our Hollywood adventures in the days to come.
Day 7- Universal Studios & Magical Moments
Hollywood had us buzzing with excitement, and Day 7 promised a full day of thrills, immersive experiences, and playful nostalgia. After breakfast near our Hollywood Historic Hotel, we headed to Universal Studios Hollywood to make the most of a full theme park day.
Morning Adventure:
Arriving early allowed us to maximize our time and avoid long lines. We started with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, wandering through Hogsmeade, exploring the shops, and admiring the intricate details that make the area so immersive.
Next, we made our way to the recently opened Nintendo World, which was a highlight for everyone in the group. From racing in Mario Kart rides to exploring interactive themed areas with familiar Nintendo characters, it was a bright, colorful, and immersive experience that blended nostalgia with high-tech fun. Photo opportunities were everywhere, and the energy in this new section of the park was infectious.
Other must-see attractions included:

- Transformers: The Ride 3D – A mix of 3D effects and motion-based excitement.

Day 8- Malibu Beach & Farewell California
Our final morning in California was bittersweet. After seven days of sun, sand, deserts, and city streets, we wanted to savor just a little more of the coast before heading home. We checked out of the Hollywood Historic Hotel and made our way to one last iconic stop: Malibu Beach.
Morning: Pacific Coast Highway & Malibu Beach
The drive along the Pacific Coast Highway is classic California: rugged cliffs, sparkling ocean waves, and palm trees swaying in the breeze. Pulling into Malibu Beach, we were greeted by soft sand, gentle surf, and a peaceful rhythm that made it the perfect spot for a final morning stroll.
Walking along the shoreline, we paused to reflect on the trip, snap photos, and soak up the sunshine. The combination of the warm sun, salty breeze, and sound of the waves was a quiet, restorative way to end our weeklong adventure.
With hearts full and cameras overflowing with memories, we drove to LAX for our flight home.
